……And the Lambda Alpha International 2014 Member of the Year goes to….none other than our very own Ely Chapter Member………

Laurie Martston, FAICP!

Laurie was nominated by our chapter and won because her commitment to Lambda Alpha International is extensive and optimizes Richard T. Ely’s maxim, “the law of society is service.”  She is currently serving on the International Board of Governors as Secretary and has previously served as Assistant Secretary and Regional Vice President. She has also organized, served and participated in numerous Land Economics Weekends. Laurie is currently a trusted senior advisor to the Ely Chapter Board members, walking us through the policies and matters of importance to LAI, including urging us to support the most recent dues increase. Laurie served on our Board from 2007 – 2010 and is a Richard T. Ely Distinguished Chapter Service Awardee. Laurie was also a critical member of the Ely Chapter committee to ensure a successful LAI / APA member reception during the American Planning Association’s National Conference in Chicago in 2013.

Laurie was elected into the 2014 College of Fellows American Institute of Certified Planners, one the highest honors of the AICP. She was selected and gave the following presentations at the 2013 APA National Conference: “Defensible, Ethical Decision Making for Plan Commissioners” and “Burnham’s 1909 Plan of Chicago.”  With the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development at DePaul University, Ms. Marston developed and conducted 40 educational programs for planners in the Chicago region. With the Illinois Chapter of APA and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, Ms. Marston organized and presented 30 Plan Commission training workshops. Laurie Marston is an educator, trainer, editor, facilitator, planner, civic volunteer, mentor and a devoted Ely Chapter member.

Here is a quote from the Award Committee Chairperson:  “Your nomination materials were compelling and the committee was emphatic in their praise for the longstanding work of Laurie on behalf of the Society”.

Please join us as we celebrate Laurie’s recognition at the Ely Chapter Holiday Party on December 10th.  She will receive the award at the Spring LEW in Washington D.C. in 2015.

Congratulations Laurie!
